FACULTY OF HUMANITIES - ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE
Objectives Of The Program
The aim of the English Language and Literature program is, by offering instruction in an interdisciplinary manner, to help students acquire; proficiency in written and spoken English through advanced level English skills courses; skills of comparative and critical thinking by way of comprehensively studying the literature, history and culture of another European country through the main literature courses; and cultural literacy, awareness, and skills of comparison as regards both his/her own culture and the target culture through the core British Cultural Studies courses. In the most general sense, the program aims to ensure that the graduates are individuals who have advanced knowledge of another society through the study of the literature and culture of that society, and of his/her own society through the mirror effect of the former study; who can think creatively, freely, and critically; and who have the necessary foreign language skills and the intellectual formation to meet the demands of a globalized World. The program offers a curriculum that is designed in consideration, and local adaptation, of the most recent scientific and methodological developments in the fields of English Language and Literature and Cultural Studies especially in the United Kingdom and the United States of America. As such, the curriculum is up-to-date but also flexible enough to allow improvement and further updating as and when necessary. Moreover, by taking the required departmental elective courses that are available in the curriculum on three different lines, the students have the opportunity to gain more specialised formation in either one of the fields of British Cultural Studies, American Culture and Literature, and Translation, based on their own preference.
